Transforming Flowers into Skincare Essentials
Flowers bring more than just beauty to our gardens; they can have a profound impact on our skin. Beyond their enchanting appearance and delightful fragrance, many flowers possess skin-enhancing properties that have been utilized in natural skincare products for centuries. Their ability to calm, heal, and nourish skin makes them a staple ingredient in many skincare routines.
Certain flowers are rich in vitamins, antioxidants, and minerals, all of which contribute to healthier skin. Whether it’s calming inflamed skin, repairing damage, or clearing clogged pores, the natural benefits of flowers can make a noticeable difference in how your skin looks and feels.
Here are some of my favorite flowers used in skincare products and the benefits they bring to the table:
Rose
Rose is a beloved flower in the skincare world due to its high content of vitamins A and C, both of which help brighten the complexion. Its soothing properties also make it an excellent choice for dry skin. I personally use rose petals to create a potent infusion, which I then use for its pore-cleansing effects. Rose can be found in several products, including my Sweet Cheeks cleanser, Scrub Up exfoliator, and Perfect Pores serum. Additionally, I’m a huge fan of rosehip, which also offers incredible skin benefits.
Chamomile
Chamomile is well-known for its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial qualities. It works wonders in calming irritated skin and reducing redness or swelling. I use chamomile in my Clean Sweep cleansing balm, where it helps to soothe and heal the skin.
Lavender
Lavender isn’t just popular for its calming aroma; it also has numerous skincare benefits. Its relaxing properties can help ease stress and improve sleep quality. Because of these benefits, I include lavender in my Dream A Little Dream body wash, which provides a calming experience for both the skin and the mind.
Calendula
Calendula, known for its anti-inflammatory and wound-healing properties, is perfect for soothing cuts, scrapes, and burns. I’m excited to announce that I will be incorporating calendula into my upcoming hand cream, which I plan to launch in the Autumn.
Wild Pansy
Wild pansy is a wonderful flower used in skincare due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It helps to clear congested skin and balance out the complexion. That’s why I include a wild pansy infusion in my Tone Up product.
Electric Daisy
While not as widely known, electric daisy is a skincare powerhouse that deserves more attention. It plays a crucial role in restoring the skin’s structure, especially as we age. Electric daisy helps to firm and tighten skin, reducing the appearance of wrinkles. It’s often referred to as the “natural botox” of the plant world. You’ll find it in many of my products, including A Little Lift serum, Rest & Regenerate night balm, Perfect Pores serum, Balanced & Beautiful organic facial oil, and Balancing Act daily moisturizer.
How Flowers are Used in Skincare Products
Garden flowers are incorporated into skincare products in various ways to harness their beneficial properties. The most common methods include:
Flower Extracts: These are created by extracting the active compounds from flowers using techniques such as steam distillation or cold pressing. The extracts are then incorporated into skincare products for their healing effects.
Essential Oils: These are made by distilling the flowers through steam. Essential oils are often used in skincare products not only for their benefits but also for their pleasant fragrance.
Hydrosols: Hydrosols are gentler alternatives to essential oils. They are created by steam distilling flowers and collecting the remaining water. These floral waters are often added to skincare products for their soothing and calming effects.
Fresh and Dried Flowers: I also enjoy making floral infusions, sometimes referred to as floral teas. These infusions are used in toners, serums, and cleansers to add the healing power of fresh or dried flowers to your skincare routine.
Incorporating flowers into your skincare regimen can bring countless benefits, from soothing irritated skin to providing nourishment and hydration. Whether you prefer flower extracts, essential oils, or floral infusions, these natural ingredients can help you achieve healthier, more radiant skin.
