Creating a Spa Experience at Home
If you’re longing for the relaxation and rejuvenation of a spa visit but can’t make it to one, why not bring the spa experience to your own home? With just a few simple steps and ingredients, you can create a luxurious and soothing facial that will make you feel like you’ve had a professional treatment. This is also a perfect activity to enjoy with friends, family, or even your children for a fun bonding experience.
When I visit a spa, the first thing I notice is the calming aroma that fills the air. You can easily recreate this at home by using your favorite essential oils. No diffuser needed! Simply drop a few drops of your chosen essential oil blend onto a cotton pad, then place it on the back of a warm radiator. The heat will naturally diffuse the fragrance throughout the room, giving your home the same relaxing atmosphere.
My go-to blend includes Neroli (orange blossom) and mandarin for a relaxing yet uplifting scent. Alternatively, I love my Spice of Life blend, which includes spicy and citrus notes like ginger, cardamom, black pepper, lime, and lemongrass—perfect for a holiday-like vibe.
To start your home spa experience, you could even indulge in a foot bath. Fill a large bowl with warm water and add a few drops of essential oil or your favorite body wash. While your feet soak, you can begin your facial.
For the full spa experience, dress comfortably—think fluffy robes—and pull your hair back with a headband.
Step One: Cleanse, Cleanse, and Cleanse Again!
Start by thoroughly cleansing your face. If you’re wearing makeup or sunscreen, use a wash-off cleansing balm or oil, like Clean Sweep, to remove these products. Rinse your face with warm water and then cleanse again with your preferred product to fully clean your skin. This second cleanse ensures your face is ready for the treatment ahead and helps you achieve the best results.
Step Two: Exfoliate for Radiance
Exfoliating is essential for achieving brighter, more radiant skin. Look for an exfoliator that contains natural fruit acids, like Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs), and ingredients like papaya extract. These ingredients work to dissolve dead skin cells gently, speeding up the skin’s renewal process.
I personally use natural jojoba grains in my facial scrub, as they are spherical and provide a gentle polish to your skin. If you have sensitive skin or conditions like rosacea, it’s best to skip this step to avoid irritation.
Step Three: Apply a Mask for That Extra Glow
A facial mask is a key step in any spa treatment, and it’s one I recommend making a regular part of your skincare routine. Masks are available in many varieties: deep-cleansing clay masks, hydrating sheet masks, and nourishing balms for dry or damaged skin. Alternatively, you can mix your own mask to suit your skin’s needs.
For example, my Look on the Bright Side powder mask is packed with vitamin C, white clay, and natural fruit extracts like papaya and pineapple. This combination helps brighten the complexion while clearing any congestion. You can also mix this mask with products like Freshen Up for extra hydration or Bloom & Glow for added radiance.
While the mask works its magic, finish off your foot bath and treat yourself to a relaxing foot massage. If you’re doing this facial for someone else, offer a hand or foot massage as part of the experience.
Step Four: Facial Massage for Relaxation
After 10–20 minutes, rinse off your mask and spritz your face with either Freshen Up or Tone Up to refresh your skin. Then, take at least 10 minutes to perform a facial massage. Use a few drops of your favorite face oil or, if your skin feels dry, you can opt for my Rest & Regenerate organic night balm.
Facial massage is incredibly beneficial—it helps rejuvenate dull skin, promotes circulation, and encourages lymphatic drainage, which helps remove toxins. Plus, it’s a great way to relax the muscles in your face, particularly around the jawline. This massage will not only leave you feeling calm but will also give your skin a healthy, radiant glow.
Warm up the oil or balm between your palms and gently apply it to your face. If you’re using one of my products, such as my face oils that contain essential oils, take a moment to inhale the aromas and enjoy the calming scents.
Step Five: Finish with a Refreshing Spritz
After your facial massage, finish the treatment by spritzing a little Freshen Up over your skin to awaken your senses. If you’re treating someone else, they might be so relaxed they’ve drifted off, so gently remind them that the treatment is nearing its end. A final spritz of Freshen Up will leave their skin feeling refreshed and their mood uplifted.
This at-home facial is a wonderful way to unwind and take care of your skin. Make it part of your weekly skincare ritual, and you’ll notice your skin feeling softer, smoother, and more radiant. Plus, you’ll likely be smiling from the relaxation and joy it brings to both your skin and spirit.
