How to Protect Your Skin from Spring Storms
As spring rolls in with its unpredictable weather, it’s common to experience a mix of chilly winds and wet conditions. These shifts in temperature can take a toll on your skin, even if it’s usually calm and radiant. Cold air, combined with the drying effects of indoor heating, can leave your skin feeling dry, flaky, and sensitive. Here are some tips to help you shield your skin from the harsh elements this spring.
Stay Hydrated
Keeping your skin hydrated starts from the inside out. Drink plenty of water, coconut water, or herbal teas throughout the day. If plain water feels boring, try adding some natural flavor by squeezing in lemon or lime, or infusing your water with slices of cucumber or ginger. For an extra refreshing boost, try a hydrating skin tonic. I recommend using a spritz like Freshen Up, which is packed with organic rose, rose geranium, and neroli waters, along with aloe vera to deeply hydrate and refresh your skin during the day.
Eat the Rainbow
Eating a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables can do wonders for your skin, as well as your overall health. Tropical fruits like pineapple, papaya, and mango are perfect for this time of year and can be added to both savory and sweet dishes. I enjoy mixing papaya or mango with shredded carrots and a zingy dressing made from garlic, fish sauce, maple syrup, lime, and chili, then topping it off with toasted rice grains. Roasted savoy cabbage with a parsley, caper, and raisin dressing is another favorite. These nutrient-rich foods help nourish your skin and keep it looking vibrant.
Snack on Nuts and Seeds
Nuts and seeds are packed with essential fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals that your skin will love. Almonds, walnuts, macadamia nuts, and hazelnuts, along with seeds like pumpkin, sunflower, and chia, make for tasty and skin-loving snacks. These healthy fats help keep your skin soft and radiant, especially when the weather is harsh.
Use Balms for Extra Nourishment
When the weather is cold and harsh, balms can be a game-changer for your skin. They are nourishing and rich, turning dry, dull skin into soft, smooth, and glowing skin. A good night balm can work wonders as it feeds your skin while you sleep. Look for balms that are high in essential fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals. Ingredients like rosehip, evening primrose, pumpkin, and macadamia oils, along with avocado and argan oil, are great choices.
In my Rest & Regenerate night balm, I blend these nourishing oils with powerful antioxidants like rosemary, CoQ10, and vitamins A and E. It also contains electric daisies, which have been dubbed the plant equivalent of botox for their rejuvenating properties. Applying this balm before bed will leave you with glowing, radiant skin by morning, no matter what the weather is like outside.
By following these simple tips, you can keep your skin healthy and glowing, even as the spring storms roll in.
